SHED-itation

I love sheds.

I really do. There is so much you can do with a shed. It’s not quite the indoors and not quite the outdoors but a happy medium.

Being in a shed makes me feel closer to nature but still somewhat protected from the elements. Being in a shed inspires me, gives me hope, lets my ideas breath, gives me permission to be silly and creative, lets me experiment without fear of failure because being in a shed is somehow not part of real adult life.

Being in a shed reminds me of being a child and finding a safe play space with random stuff that I could ‘make believe’ with. Building, painting, making, creating a safe little world within a safe little space. Thats why I love sheds.

Even now, as an adult, I find myself ogling sheds of all kinds. I love looking at old derelict hay barns, broken down stone out houses and of course top of the line, bespoke steel sheds.

Transforming spaces is one of my favourite past times and the potential for sheds is endless. With a bit of imagination, yours can become a garden room, a reading space, an office (so relevant now that most people are working from home), a child’s play room, a potting shed, extra storage space, an artists studio, a workshop, a grow house or just somewhere to take a coffee break or a deep breath…

My most recent revelation for shed-usage happened as I was playing hide and seek with my young son. I hid in our garden shed, that once had been used as an office, then a sun room, then for storage and now for games of hide and seek. It was taking my son a long time to find me so I decided to use those precious moments in hiding to meditate. I closed my eyes, focused on my breath and let myself drift into bliss.

I like to clear my mind and let it wander free at the beginning of meditation sessions. Sometimes the information that lands in my mind is astounding, other times it’s hilariously silly. On this occasion, it was quite simple, I thought, “Isn’t this lovely, I’m meditating… in a shed. I should call this, SHED-itation”. And just like that, a simple, silly, wonderful idea was born.

Now, most of my meditations take place in my shed. I “SHED-itate” nearly everyday and I find its the most wonderful use of my outdoor living space. I’m not fully outside but still feeling connected to nature, I’m not fully inside but fully disconnected from my house duties and distractions and all the while I’m feeling free and connected to my true self.

Shouldn’t everyone have a shed to dream in? What does yours look like?

Thank you for reading.

Love,

Hilary x
